The wall actually runs through Gilsland making it the perfect spot for anybody seeking a relaxing and informative break. This small, peaceful North England village has nearby public footpaths, cycle trails and bridle paths to enjoy, the nearest towns being Haltwhistle and Brampton. Fishing is a much loved pastime in Brampton, and people who appreciate horse riding usually head for Haltwhistle. There are several other places of interest to see around the area such as picturesque Thirlwall castle, Triermain Castle, Milecastle 48 and Gilsland Spa.
In Glilsland, you are also ideally located to explore the North Pennines, Eden Valley and the Scottish Borders. The mysterious Popping Stone, traditionally associated with courtship and marriage proposals is situated in the vicinity of the Irthing Gorge near Gilsland. Local legend has it that this is the place where Sir Walter Scott proposed to Margaret Carpenter in 1797.
